Dog Meal Aggression, Part 3

- Stroke and pet the dog while he is having meal and simultaneously talk to him in a calming tone. Everything you’re doing at this point is demonstrating the dog that it is a good thing for you to be around.

- Stand at a distance your dog is comfy with, then gradually decrease that distance over time. You may flick a few treats in (or near) the cup as you slowly decrease the distance.

- Put the pet’s cup down with nothing in it, your dog will look back at you as though you are mad. He will then factually ask you to come over and fill his cup.

- Feed your dog as normal but keep back a few pieces of his food. At the time when he is ended licking the cup, he will look back up at you, after that you may come over and present him the remaining food.

- Drop several of the dog’s very beloved treats into his bowl every single moment you walk past it. After some time of that your puppy will welcome the sight of you coming close to the bowl.

- When the pet is having meal, call him over to you, when he gets to you reward him, make it worth his while , after that let him back to the food bowl.

- While you’re preparing the pet’s meal put him in a down-stay or sit pose, only release him from your command once you have put his cup down. By making that you are controlling meal time and setting up (or re-establishing) your role as your pet’s leader.

- Work with the other family member on this procedure. Put the puppy in his collar and leash and have him sit with your helper at the time you get ready the food. Once you are ready release the puppy and allow him his meal. Once more you’re controlling the situation.

- Attempt the “Trade Up Technique”. What you do is take away the food or toy your puppy is defending, and replace this one with something better. You can apply an obedience command such as “give” or “leave it” to encourage the dog to release the precious resource he is protecting. Then you take said resource (the meal or toy) and give the trade up item to the pet. When the dog has ended with the new item, you can then present back the resource you captured. Such method proves to your puppy that he’ll get something notable for giving something up, it will recondition his thinking.

- Every time you are with the dog have him in a pinch or prong collar with a leash connected. Each time he demonstrates any symptoms of dog meal aggression you directly carry out a correction to the puppy by snapping on the leash. What this does to your puppy is build a negative association to the act of his meal guarding antics.

Good luck with your teaching efforts.
